You’re So Crafty

Spreading the crafty love … and love of crafting

This is so important – Orphan Works Bill October 3, 2008

Filed under: Uncategorized — youresocrafty @ 11:55 am

From my friend Margot Potter’s blog (she’s so eloquent! and crafty, too!) –
“Oh and while our attention is diverted, some powerful folks who want absolute access to every piece of art, photo or video ever posted on the internet are trying to hijack your art. Yup, they pushed Orphan Works through the Senate under cover of night and now they’re rushing it through the House. Call your representative and tell them that you will not stand for this rape and pillage of the creative output of artists, videographers and photographers. Watch this video. Embed it. Spread the word. Do it NOW! It does matter. It is important. We have to act. We have the right to own our art and no one has the right to profit from our creativity without fair compensation and due credit. Yeah, they really do think we’re that dumb. If they pass this law, anyone who wants to use any art, photography or video you’ve ever posted online for anything they choose, will be free to do so.”

And, in listening to this audio clip, I learned that you will have to PAY to protect your work. Every single doodle mark you make is fair game. This is big, folks. Seriously big.

OMG – we’ve been blogged about! July 6, 2008

How exciting!!! I’ve been reading the Seguin (TX) Photo Blog for a while after stumbling on it by searching online for “stuff” about our community. She’s tagged in my Bloglines subscription (LOVE bloglines! – it keeps you major-updated on blog updates with one click) Anyway, back to the point, I clicked today to see what photos she’s posted and WOW! There we were!!

I must say, it was quite exciting! Although a photo always captures stuff you *may* not want to focus on (weeds, flowers that are frying in the hot summer, kinda funky parking lot), it was very cool to see her expert shots and read her very kind words.

Thanks Thien! See you soon! Now go craft something!

Seeing sewing … May 5, 2008

Is it wrong that I think our watertower looks like a pincushion in this picture?

pin cushion?

On second look, it reminds me of a bobbin-lace pillow….

(seriously, i think they’re in the final stages of some ‘renovation’ here – I hope they finish soon ;-P)

If you have some time, read my earlier post about Anniversaries and help us celebrate ours! If you can read this, thank a TEACHER! And teachers, if you can read this, you get a Teacher Appreciation Week discount all month! Stop in and check it out!

Anniversaries and all that stuff April 28, 2008

I’m normally not one to talk a great deal about myself … (normally! ha ha!) … but there are a couple of things I’d like to share with whoever’s reading this out in blogland.. Spring has always been a favorite time of year – I’m sure it is for lots of you – renewal, growth, the smells (fresh-cut grass – yum!), the vivid colors (new greens, fresh pinks), and the sense that all is well in the world, that it’s not all dark and dreary and cold and gray.

For me, Spring also holds some anniversaries. And the ones I’d like to share with you involve you! Could that BE any cooler?!!?

Grab a cup of your favorite beverage, it’s kinda a long read!

Anniversaries ….

On Memorial Day one year ago, I spent my first weekend at the new You’re So Crafty! I’ve always dreamed of owning my own store – my first desire about 20 years ago was a fabric store, then as my interests grew, thoughts turned to a bead store, then back to a quilt store, and you may see a pattern here. When I learned that the local scrapbook store was for sale, I couldn’t stop thinking about it. I’d put the thought out of my head – dismissing the ‘dream’ as crazy. After all, I have a full-time job that occupies about 60 hours a week, along with friends, family, pets, a house, etc., how would I have the time!?

But I couldn’t shake it. Sleepless nights; all-encompassing thoughts; ideas; brainstorming with my BFFs (best friends forever): lists and notes on post-its, legal pads and napkins; and sweaty palms (well, not really). So, I did it. My dream for the store was that it would be a cozy place for crafters of all types to explore their creativity and feel comfortable hanging out. Most crafters I know enjoy learning new things and I knew that many crafts cross over into other crafts – scrapbookers and cardmakers/stampers can use collage techniques and fabric; beaders can use many of the scrapbooking supplies and techniques; quilters can explore the use of amazing yarns and even rubber stamps; mosaics can serve as instant ’scrapbooks’ and you can see another pattern here…

I think You’re So Crafty is that place. I am so fortunate to have an amazing team of employees and instructors and together we are continuing to expand the scope of what we offer area crafters.

There’s a huge movement among young women (and men) who are returning to handcrafting as a hobby and as a career – home sewing is experiencing a resurgence in popularity and more and more young people are being fulfilled by the joy of crafting. It’s exciting to be a part of an industry that brings people together, brings them joy and allows them to express themselves, learn new things, and make new memories (in whatever avenue they choose). It’s why I chose the name – You’re So Crafty – as an affirmation, that yes, you ARE crafty. You are CREATIVE. We all are. It may just take a little coaxing to bring it out!

The second anniversary – which happens around Mother’s Day – is my 20-year cancer survivor anniversary. I saw my gynecologist at a golf tournament this weekend and when I mentioned that anniversary occurrence to him, I think he got a little teary. And, BELIEVE ME, this is not an emotional man! LOL!

I was 27 years old when I was diagnosed with Stage 4 Ovarian Cancer. After surgeries and chemotherapy and the care of a brilliant (and kinda strange) oncologist and a brilliant (and kinda strange) gynecologist / surgeon, I found the way to other end of the tunnel. In May of 1998, I was given a clean bill of health, but they don’t pronounce you cured for a little while longer. Weekly checkups turned to monthly, then to every other month, then every six months, then annually. And suddenly, the nightmare that seemed like it would never end was over. And 20 years have gone by. Just like that.

I don’t wear my survivorship on a t-shirt very often, but I think about it sometimes. When I’m feeling a little low, or like I can’t do face another uphill battle, I remember what I DID survive. I was a hospice referral – if you don’t know what that is, it means the medical folks looked at my diagnosis and believed that I would not survive. Statistics show that the survival rate (especially 20 years ago) Stage 4 – something like 17%.

I’m talking about this because I want women to be aware of the disease that is undetectable at early stages – please check out this website for more info - http://www.ovariancancer.org/

Don’t let it scare you. Talk to your doctor – especially if there’s a family history. Stay aware of your body and its activity. Be informed. Take care of yourself so you can continue to be crafty!

During the month of May, I want to celebrate these anniversaries with my new friends, old friends and family. One way we’re going to that is to donate a portion of all proceeds from the month of May to non-profit cancer organizations. My first choice, obviously, is ovarian cancer organizations, but if you have a particular organization you’d like to donate to, let us know when you’re in the store and we’ll do that for you.

So, celebrate with us! May 3 is National Scrapbooking Day and we’re kicking off the month with our first-ever Croptacular on May 2 & 3. We’re filling up the month with other special events, new classes, and art camps for kids. Stay tuned to the website and your emails for more announcements of fun activities.

And, from all of us at You’re So Crafty – thanks for helping make our dreams a reality. We’ve enjoyed the ride!

Cooking School was fun (I’m still no good!), Business Showcase was Great! March 8, 2008

Well, the Taste of Home Cooking School was a blast! That was our first time to take the little shop o’ crafts on the road. It was actually really fun! I am glad to have met so many new folks who’ve been driving by the shop. We hope you’ll pop in soon! Meanwhile, we’re gluttons for fun and we took the shop on the road again last week – We shared a booth at the Business Showcase with A Rose Petal.

We’ll be on the road again at the Chamber’s Agri-Fest on Thursday, April 10, from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. It’s a great event that showcases the importance of agriculture in everyday life. Along with commercial vendors, there will be lots of food booths, and a ton of activities – educational AND fun – for the youngsters.

Wow! Check out the Alcohol Ink Technique - Toni’s classes are always so much fun and this one was no exception. She has such a sense of curiousity, we really started brainstorming about all the neat ways this technique could be used – on cards, glass, scrapbooks, home decor and more. We’re hosting another class on March 13. Two days after her Faces of Spring Class, next Tuesday!

Our Clay Art class has been rescheduled to start April 3 - and it’s going to be so much FUN! Surround youreself with leaves that never wilt!

Marilyn’s lining up some fabulous quilting classes – in addition to the multiple-week classes, we’re working on some one- and two-day projects. By the way, if you’re a fabricholic, we thank you for your patience as we transition the fabric department. We’ll get there! We won’t let down the sew-ers! If you have some time, drop me a line and let me know what kinds of fabrics YOU like (’cuz I like ‘ all!)

March is National Craft Month – and we are offering weekly and daily specials, 10% off class signups, 100% off workroom fees, an open house, and more surprises! Come visit with us and share the joy of crafting. Be sure to link on over to the classes page – lots of info about our upcoming classes – knitting, quilting, scrapbooking, cardmaking, and basketweaving!

What’s a craft store like you doing at a cooking school like this? February 8, 2008

Filed under: Uncategorized — youresocrafty @ 11:13 am

Well, punny you should ask that. At first thought, one might not think the two are related. Crafting and Cooking? Usually, one suffers because all the attention is given to the other! HA!

But really, creativity is creativity – whether you’re painting, scrapbooking, designing jewelry or cooking. And there’s crossover between crafting and cooking (as in many creative outlets) – making tags or labels for your homemade gifts is a simple way to combine your two loves. Or, have you thought about designing a recipe book for a personalized, and very special, gift? The Accordian Album format is perfect for creating a themed recipe booklet – whip up a booklet full of romantic recipes for the anniversary couple, basic recipes for a young bride, baby food recipes for the exhausted mom … the possibilities are endless. So, we’re headed to the Taste of Home Cooking School on Tuesday, Feb. 19. It’s at the Seguin Coliseum and you can learn more about it at www.seguingazette.com. We’ll have a booth with some fun make-n-takes, and there will be several other vendors on hand, as well. Hope to see you there! In the meantime, keep on craftin’ (just remember to clean the paint out of the brush before you baste that bird!)

I want to introduce myself! My name is Melanie Esqueda and I am the knitting instructor at You’re So Crafty. I also work there a couple of Saturdays a month and will be offering afternoon knitting workshops on the Saturdays that I am there.

I am originally from Fort Kent Maine, a very small town on the northernmost border of Maine and Canada. There I learned how to knit and crochet from my paternal grandmother, aka Gram Baker. I really loved to crochet, and did it exclusively till about 5 years ago, then I picked up a pair of knitting needles and got clickin’. I am mostly self taught, Gram taught me the bare basics, but I have the mind that easily wraps around the art of knitting. My Aunt Jean of North Haven Maine helps me on occasion if I am really stuck. When I was pregnant with my son in 2003, I decided to take up knitting again and I haven’t put down my needles much since then.A little background on me since I came to TX – I joined the Air Force in 1994 and came to San Antonio via Lackland AFB on March 17th. I went to training school in San Antonio at Brooks AFB, then got assigned to Randolph AFB, then went to the reserves at Kelly AFB. Needless to say, I was destined for this area!!!!! While in the AF, I came through New Braunfels a couple of times and thought that this was the place I would like to settle down in. Little did I know that my future husband lived there!!!!! Yep, I married a native New Braunfleser. We then went on to have three children – Olivia, who is 9, Sophia, 6, and Danny Jr, who will be 4 next week. We have a little menagerie of pets, and live on a little piece of heaven, between New Braunfels and McQueeney. My home away from home is Seguin, which I have grown quite attached to over the years, as all my county stuff (Driver’s liscence, taxes, etc) is there. When I met Dana (through my knitting friends from KOZY ) I knew we would be fast friends. I non-chalantly offered myself to teach knitting classes at YSC, if the need ever arose. To my surprise, it arose rather quickly! My life hasn’t been the same since. I have found my niche in this world! It is also nice to have my very own identity, and it is even better because it is “knit together” with my passion for knitting!

I have had a group of students with me since the first class in September, who are all so cool and wacky and interesting and funny. A very special bunch of ladies. (You might even say…a close-knit group!) I am so looking forward to new students, to getting to know people and sharing my love of the craft with them. A special bond happens when people gather together to knit or craft.

If you have never touched a set of needles, or if you have and want to learn a new skill, let one of us know at YSC, and we’ll get you signed up! I am open for suggestions, too, for class projects.

Hope to see you soon!
Melanie
